APPLICATION DATA SHEET
Marine Ballast Tanks
RUST CURE® has numerous applications.
This document details our recommendations for the chemical cleaning
of marine ballast tanks. PREPARATION:
Pump out all water and physically remove excess scale or other
loose material from the bottom of the ballast tank. Assemble
a drum of RUST CURE® , a strainer funnel, two pumps with plastic
hoses and an all plastic sprinkler.
APPLICATION:
Affix the sprayer to the bottom area of the ballast tank and
connect to #1 pump. Affix a plastic hose to the
very bottom of the ballast tank and connect to #2 pump.
Close the ballast tank and activate #1 pump for a continuous
spraying of RUST CURE® on the inside of the tank.
As soon as RUST CURE® fills the lowest place in the tank activate
pump #2 and circulate the RUST CURE® into the strainer funnel
and back to the drum. Continue spraying until the top and sides
of the inside of the ballast tank are free of rust.
Turn off pump #1 and continue to pump all the RUST CURE® from
the bottom of the tank with pump #2. Blow dry the inside of
the ballast tank by forced circulation of hot dry air.
EXPECTATION:
Assuming the pump and sprayer size are coordinated with the
ballast tank size, then the continuous sprinkling of RUST CURE®
on the top and sides of the tank will remove all rust. When
thoroughly dry RUST CURE® will have penetrated the pores of the
metal, stopped electrolysis and sealed with a thin but tough
film (approx. .00061"). Most paints and conventional primers
bond well to a surface treated with RUST CURE®. (For specialty
paints we recommend following the manufacturer's instruction
after treating with RUST CURE®).
RECLAMATION: Residue
will run to the bottom of, the tank and be pumped to the strainer
for disposal or possible reclaiming as fertilizer. RUST CURE® returned to the drum may be re-used and should not be disposed
of.
CAUTION: We do not recommend
hand application of RUST CURE® in an enclosed area without adequate
ventilation, protective clothing and respirator equipment.
Chemical reaction of RUST CURE® with metal will emit gasses which
are irritating to the skin and respiratory organs.
PAINTED SURFACES TREATED, WITH RUST CURE® LAST LONGER THAN WHEN NON CURED.
DO NOT RINSE WITH WATER!!
SURFACE MUST BE THOROUGHLY
DRY BEFORE PAINTING!!
